Squatters removed from St Agnes after 30 year fight ends
I saw, whilst walking through South London last week, a large continent of police assembling to march to the far side of Kennington Park. A 30 year battle was soon to come to an end across the other side of the common. The heavy mob were about to go into St Agnes and clear the squat of the remaining stragglers who refused to budge. Some had already disappeared to avoid the rough and tumble of being forced to exit by the police.
The firm arm of the law represent the show of strength, but there is also a stong contingent of firms from the private sector. Security companies compete for 'traveller eviction' contracts, and offer other eviction services. Part of their operation is the site clearance activity that follows a successful ejection of people from a building. This perhaps the most unpleasant aspect as it often involves the removal of used needles and human waste.
Not only were the St Agnes Squatters freeloading off of the State, they were also quite enterprising. They made empty houses habitable, built a cafe, a rockery, kept an eye on local homeless people with no benefits or waiting lists. A distraught squatter remarked "We looked after each other, everyone was welcome, you could leave your front door open,''.
The park was dark on Wednesday, with the menace of numerous 'hoodies' milling around in the background, but I still thought I would show a little solidarity. They were no problem to me, I considered, so I shall be there when the old place is defeated and empty. Minutes later I was standing face to face with a line of policemen, resembling a west End chorus line about to dance. I imagined I would hear music and see them kick their legs high to the left and then to the right. In front stand the homeless ex-squatters banging their bongo drums and dancing. A van was there to supply drinks to the policemen, whilst the homeless ex-squatters trudged off down to the barricades.
