Saltwater Fishing in San Diego?

I'll be visiting San Diego for a holiday during July.

I was wondering, what type of fishing license will I need for these specific areas: on any shoreline of Mission Bay; on any shoreline of Pacific, Mission, Ocean Beaches; on the Jetty on South Mission Beach; on the Pier at Ocean Beach; Shelter Island Pier and Shoreline; lastly Harbor Island opposite the boats?

Also, if I rent a small boat for fishing in Mission Bay, what other documents will I need to rent and legally fish in that water (I am over 25y.o., if that matters)?

If this matters, I plan to use anchovies, shrimp, clams, mussels, sand crabs, and ghost shrimp as my bait; I'll be using two rods with reels at a time, unless that is illegal.

I plan to catch and release any fish I catch except for anything that would be construed as huge.

You'll need a resident sportfishing license. That costs $43.46. If you stay in coastal waters you will not need the enhancement stamp for a second pole. If you fish in inland waters like lakes you will need one. Cost is $13.53.

If you are not a resident of California your fishing license costs are as follows:

One-day Sport Fishing License $14.04 Allows a resident or nonresident 16 years of age or older to take fish, mollusks, crustaceans, invertebrates, amphibians or reptiles in inland or ocean waters. Additional validations or report cards are required for certain species or areas. One-day sport fishing licenses are exempt from the Ocean Enhancement Validation requirement.

Two-day Sport Fishing License $21.86 Allows a resident or nonresident 16 years of age or older to take fish, mollusks, crustaceans, invertebrates, amphibians or reptiles in inland or ocean waters for two consecutive days. Additional validations and report cards are required for certain species and areas. Two-day sport fishing licenses are exempt from the Ocean Enhancement Validation requirement.

Ten-day Nonresident Sport Fishing License $43.46 Allows a nonresident 16 years of age or older to take fish, mollusks, crustaceans, invertebrates, amphibians or reptile in inland or ocean waters for ten consecutive days. Additional validations and report cards are required for certain species and areas.

If you are a resident you will have to buy the Ocean Enhancement Stamp if you want to fish in the ocean. It costs $4.89.

The Shelter Island Pier is free to fish off. The grassy area and the rocks nearby require a license. I think you need a license to fish off of the OB Pier and Crystal Pier, but I'm not 100% sure.

I noticed in your list of baits you left out Blood Worms. Try them. They work well for bass. The frozen anchovies seem to attract stingrays and small sharks in Mission Bay. Occassionaly you might get a bass on anchovies. Halibut like live bait so if that's what you're going after use live anchovies, not dead ones.

The lasttime I rented a boat all I needed was a credit card and a drivers license. That was a few years ago.

Good luck and the best time to fish the waters of Mission Bay is as the tide is coming in. Maybe start 2-3 hours before high tide and continue fishing for an hour afterwards.
