Emerson Knives, Inc is a venture started by Ernest Emerson after his interest was piqued from a small gift given by his grandfather as a child: his very own knife. Until the Viper series was known, he had pre-tactical variations of his knives. All of these models were liner lock folding knives. Even though liner lock knives are made for portability and ease of use, the workmanship he put into his models also made them visually appealing. Displayed at knife exhibitions and acknowledged for their elegance, these blades brought him what he needed. He now had the resources to produce styles he wanted, which were combat knives.
Emerson still trained as a martial artist and realized that a fixed blade knife was used for combat training, even though the same classmates preferred folding knives in real world applications. He solved this with the developtment of a solid folding knife used for combat training in the real world. He had taken his older designs and modified the grip so that they were less fanciful (not highly polished and colored) compared to those put on display. The tip was modified so that it would be wider. The specific purpose of a Viper knife was to fulfill a need among military and law enforcement.
Knives like the Commander are being used by Navy Seals and other elite groups inside the armed forces. Not surprisingly, the reliability of this knife has made it a favorite among several outdoorsmen. Additional combat models such as the Kandahar plus the CQC models have a fixed blade and are already in use by Afghani military.
