Road Bike Cycling - Choosing a Bike
There are lots of reasons for cycling on the road and there are numerous different types of road bikes. The four main types of bikes for road bike cycling are road bikes, mountain bikes, hybrid bikes and folding bikes. All these kinds of bikes have numerous different designs so choosing the most suitable bike for your needs can be a tricky decision.
What kind of bike yo decide to get to ride on the road varies depening on your use, the length of your journeys, and which kind of bike you feel comfortable riding as they all have different riding positions and intended usages.
Usually road bikes have dropped handlebars and skinny tyres, and they are very light. They are mainly designed for speed so the riding position is low down and aerodynamic. This type of bike is certainly the quickest choice for road bike cycling and is the bike of choice for racing and most experienced road bike cycling fans.
Road bikes can then be spilt into two sub-categories, of touring bikes and racing bikes. Touring bikes are perfect for long distances and cycling holidays, but race bikes are designed for speed and acceleration.
Touring bikes have lower gear proportions so they are suitable for carrying equipment with you on a long ride. Race bikes are very lightweight with rigid frames that enable the maximum transfer of power from the rider to the wheels, and offer a smooth ride.
A great choice of road bike for commuting to work, keeping fit and cycling for fun are hybrid bikes. They are basically a combination of a mountain bike and a road bike, and they are gaining in popularity all the time. They have fast spinning wheels like a road bike, but the riding position is more upright and similar to a mountain bike position, because they have flat handlebars.
Mountain bikes have tyres with substantial tread as they are designed for off-road riding, but they can also be changed to road cycling if you already have one and want to cycle on the road without another huge cost. A mountain bike can be adapted by changing the tyres for narrower road tyres. This will reduce resistance and make cycling on the road quicker and easier.
If you cycle on the road as part of your commute a great bike to use is a folding bike. They are perfect if you use buses or trains as part of your journey, or if storage is a problem at work or home. Instead of having to worry about where to leave your bike safely you can just fold it up and carry it with you.
Whichever style you choose, when road bike cycling always think about making yourself obvious to other road users by wearing reflective items and using lights. This is imperative for your safety on the road, regardless of the type of bike you choose.

Gore Alp-X SO jacket review (Bike Radar)
What first struck us about the Alp-X SO was the light, non-bulky feel of the
Gore Windstopper fabric – it’s very sleek and wears that way too. Riding
through the worst that the end of our UK summer dished out we can attest that
it keeps a chill wind at bay, and it kept us dry even though it’s not billed
as waterproof.
The cut is slim-ish but because of stretchy inserts where it matters we never
felt compromised in range of movement across the shoulders – in fact the
articulation and comfort in the riding position is second to none. Sneaked
into the raglan shoulder seam is a zip. This allows you take the sleeves off,
extending the Alp-X SO's use as a gilet (they fit into the pockets too – in
case you feel the need to switch midride).
Because it undoes from just underneath the back and up the front, you can also
use it as a pit zip. But best of all, and to prove the smallest detail can
make all the difference, we love the slim Neoprene-like seals at hem, collar
and cuff. They emphasise the lightweight feel but ...
