8-ball pool... five really straightforward questions?

Few straight-forward questions I would like to make clear... I'm talking about your classic 8-ball pool here.

1. Do you have to call every shot? I know you don't need to call 'obvious' ones, but in general, do you need to call shots? I was told you only need to call it for the 8-ball, but I have read otherwise.

2. When the only ball you have left to shoot is the 8-ball, if you scratch, do you lose?

3. Is it still called a scratch when you hit an opponent's ball first, or just an "illegal shot" or "foul"?

4. when setting up the rack, the only thing that matters is (a) there is a striped ball in one corner, and a solid in the other, (b) ball #1 is at the tip of the triangle, and (c) the 8 ball is in the middle, right? you don't have to alternate stripe-solid-stripe-solid?

5. All illegally pocketed balls stay pocketed, right? (say you hit the cue ball and object ball in, you just lose your turn and the other player gets ball-in-hand?)

thanks

1.) Calling shots is not standard in any or all games, even 8 Ball. Whether or not you have to call ANY shots is between you and your opponent. When a call shot rule is in place, it is the player's responsibility to make sure his opponent is aware what pocket is called. Most players have a "gentleman's agreement" to not call obvious shots, but when in doubt, call EVERYTHING.

2.) Not according to official BCA/WPA rules. Most league rules say this is a loss, but according to official rules, it is only a foul UNLESS you also pocket the 8 (in which case it is a loss).

3.) That is a foul. A scratch is when the cue ball goes in the pocket.

4.) Assuming you are playing 8 Ball, a ball of each group must go in the bottom corner, the 8 must go in the middle, and all other balls should be randomly dispersed. That's it. It does not matter what ball is in the front.

5.) The only time you ever take a ball out of the pocket in 8 Ball is when you make the 8 on the break (the shooter has the option of spotting the 8 or re-racking and re-breaking in this instance).

Detroit Lions: The 2011 grades are in (Detroit Free Press)

Matthew Stafford was back to his pre-injury form, completing 31 of 44 passes
(including 23 of his first 27) for a season-high 408 yards. He underthrew a
deep ball to Calvin Johnson that would have been a touchdown, but was sharp
otherwise and did well buying time with his feet. Stafford's only interception
came on a fourth-down play with the game out of hand when he was flushed from
the pocket. Grade: A-minus
