What is the best water filter bottle?
I'm going on a road + hiking trip and wanted to buy a water bottle with a filter. I want one that you can make lake, river, any kind of water drinkable. I need it to filter bacteria, chemicals, dirt, etc. I also need it to last for at least 6 months (8 cups a day at least). My bf and I both need one (or share one but then it needs to have 16 cups a day for 6 months).
Which bottle is most efficient and affordable?

I'm still waiting for the outdoor industry to come out with a full-body "stillsuit" like the ones from the movie Dune that allow the wearer to sustain an indefinite purified personal water supply.
Until they actually figure out how to make that one work, I own both an MSR Miniworks ceramic filter and have recently started using a SteriPEN Ultraviolet (UV-C) treatment. Ceramic filters will clear Bacteria and Protozoa (like Giardia and Cryptosporidium) but they will not catch waterborne viruses (i.e. Hepatitis A, SARS, Astrovirus, Calicivirus, etc). The SteriPEN kills 99.99% of all these, only takes 90 seconds to treat a full liter, and is easy to use with any wide mouth bottle like those made by Nalgene.
Net, net...if you're looking for simple and reliable results, you should take a look at one of the SteriPEN models. The Classic unit actually comes with a prefilter that goes right on your bottle and they're retailing right now for around $69.99.
