roofing information
There are some relatively new and exciting developments in the roofing shingles and in particular the re-roofing industry, including discounts for homeowners who choose to harden their homes against wind damage by using products and methods to do just that. First of which is self sealing underlayment or peel and stick under the roof shingles/tile or metal.
When nails are driven in to the product, it seals itself around the roof coverings. Using this product will protect the home from water damage in the event of blow-offs. Then re-nailing is now required by the State of Florida of your sheathing and decking, helping protect your roofs structure. The third way of strengthening your roofs structure is to connect metal brackets to the top of the wall and the sides of each roof truss. Each of these methods can give homeowners substantial discounts towards their homeowner insurance policies and provide peace of mind during hurricane season.
Some rolled roofing material manufacturers are offering 130 mile per hour rated roof shingles. Also, adhesive foam application of cement tile has a prescribed method for a 150 mile per hour wind warranty. Due to the steady rise of homeowner's insurance, taking advantage of these discounts is an excellent decision.
Maximizing ventilation in the roof system is a wise money savings choice. Two ways to accomplish this are, firstly: When re-roofing, the contractor should adequately ventilate the roof system either using roof/ridge vents or traditional electric powered exhaust fans, or the newer solar powered models. Secondly, making sure the eaves of the structure are properly ventilated using either vented soffit material, or, if there is no roof vents, powered soffit mounted exhaust fans are available. Saving money is the name of the game, and a new istallation can save you enough money towards your electricle costs that it will help pay for the re-roofing costs.
Other newer developments in the industry are advances in materials used for roof coverings, such as thermoplastic or “TPO” roof coverings. Traditionally, these products have been used for commercial applications, however they are now finding their way into the residential re-roofing construction. The guarantees with these products rival that of the asphalt shingle roofing. Also, using several differnet methods of applications including self adhesives, heat welding and mechanically fastened providing greater ease of installation. Maximum energy savings are achived due to these products being bright white in color providing maximum reflective capabilities.
All these roof building choices are available to the informed consumer and should be presented in detail by a licensed Roofing Contractor.
How to remove old seam sealer (seam grip) from a tent?
We seam sealed our tent few years ago using sem grip - getting off - so we want to get all of it off our tent and seam sealed again. How can we remove the old one? Is there some solution to use?
I've never tried to remove the old sealer. I usually just take a soft brush to remove anything that is loose and then re-apply new seam sealer. It doesn't always look the best, but I feel it adds character to the tent and lets others know that you're not a newbie.
Most seam sealers are akin to rubber cement and would require a solvent to remove it entirely. While something like rubbing alcohol might cause it to break-up more, using petro-chemicals on a nylon tent can damage the material.
If I was going to use anything, I'd try some Simple Green...heavily diluted. (Undiluted, I've used Simple Green to take wax off of floors. It should do the trick....but don't use it full strength.)
