2011 Ford Explorer SUV Unveiled

The Ford Explorer has traditionally been a large SUV with big-time power. It largely swapped out the Ford Bronco and made SUVs more palatable to the general public. But the time has come for power to give way to fuel economy, reports CrunchGear. Yes, the 2011 Ford Explorer has been unveiled, and it is really smaller than previous versions. The engine, height and mudding capacity have all been shaved down to size for green automobile pastures.

What the Taurus and Flex have done for the 2011 Ford Explorer

The 2011 Ford Explorer saves a significant amount of weight by using the same uni-body construction that Ford employs on the Taurus and Flex. Those are compact cars, making it necessary for Ford to drop some of the larger-scale SUV specs previously associated with the Explorer. No more V8; the Ford Explorer now features either a 3.5-liter V6 or a 2.0-liter EcoBoost, both in six-speed auto. The former puts out 290 horsepower in front- or four-wheel-drive options (good for towing up to 5,000 pounds), when the latter provides greater fuel economy.

A driving SUV, not a hauling SUV

If you are looking to haul large loads, the 2011 Ford Explorer may not be your best option. City driving is the norm, and being able to handle heavy weather on the road doesn't hurt. Weather is no bother, because of the front- and four-wheel-drive options. Fuel economy is the icing on the cake for this crossover SUV. Easy-selecting rear differential and Descent Control are the kind of tools you need for safe downhill driving, too. And you will find numerous more. If you felt burdened by your giant SUV before, the 2011 Ford Explorer may just be the antidote. Fuel economy is the wave, and it takes a green automobile to deliver on the promise.
