Having a Closer Look at Your Child’s Anxiety and Phobia
Fear and anxiety is part of normal living because life isn’t something that can be wholly mapped out without surprises, pleasant or otherwise. Children are, obviously, just starting out with life, and are uninitiated with the obstacles that life can often throw people; this can cause a lot of anxiety on their part, which isn’t entirely bad providing they learn to manage it. According to theories on humanistic therapy, people should understand that fear as such is not awful, as long as it is convenient and if the effect it has on a person does not prevent that person from functioning like a normal individual. Humanistic Sandtray Therapy can help people reconnect to who they really are.
A convenient anxiety level is good to help children manage more serious stressors shortly in life; children experience different kinds of anxiety that are generally considered age-appropriate. Babies are often afraid of strangers but they do get over this fear eventually; children who are unable to get past this extreme fear of strangers as they grow old tend to develop social phobia which gets worse as the fear becomes progressively uncontrollable. The role of parents in helping children overcome their phobia involves understanding what kind of behavior is helpful for their child and which isn’t going to be of use or which will in fact worsen the situation.
Children endure their fears, but there are times when some fears are felt more intensely than others, and this is what people may call phobia. However, children in general get over this kind of fear in the long run, only if the parents do their part in helping their children. The whole point is not forcing your child to face the fear head on but not dispiriting a battle with the fear either; it’s all a matter of facing your child’s fear on his or her own terms.
There are several kinds of therapies that are suitable for children, such as art or play therapy. You’ll be shocked at how play therapy can help your child get past his or her phobia; in play therapy, children will often play out symbols of their fears like giant spiders or a big and scary stranger. Play therapists can help your child overcome phobia through facing it in games and playing; the great thing about this is that parents are also persuaded to take part so that they will understand their children better.
In dealing with your child’s phobia, it’s important that you don’t play down your child’s feelings about it; for example, if your child is frightened of monsters in bed, don’t yell or make fun at him or her, rather acknowledge the feelings because even though monsters aren’t real, they are real as far as your child is concerned. Apart from the games and activities that parents can do with their children, parents can also learn how to affirm their child’s convincing features in order to help them overcome their phobias. Parents can also know what kind of behavior from them will be damaging to their children’s development. Educating your other family members about the things that should and should not be performed concerning your child’s phobia is essential because your child’s interaction is not just limited to you but extends to other members of the family as well.
You can suppose that some phobias are harder to cure and may take years before your child can completely get over it, especially if the phobia is related to a traumatic event that happened in his or her life before. One other good thing about therapy is that it consents you to learn more about precise ideas that you can do for and with your child to help him or her in the fight against phobia.
