Panama City Beach is sponsoring the USSSA (United States Specialty Sports Association) Men’s and Women’s Military World Softball Tournament after a gap of three years. Highly regarded softball teams from a variety of military groups and installations take part in this annual event. The competition is being held at the Back Beach Road Park. The event began by having an opening ceremony, home-run derby in addition to a slow pitch tournament on Thursday and will continue till Sunday afternoon. This year the competition will contain over 70 teams (women’s and men’s) competing in 4 divisions.
As per Richard Sanders, sports marketing vice president for Panama City Beach Convention and Visitors Bureau, the event is likely to draw close to 6,000 viewers throughout the three day weekend. It is likely to contribute over $1 million to the city’s economy. The high concentration of military bases around Panama City Beach like Hurlburt Field and Tyndall Air Force Base renders it a preferred destination for the special event. The softball tournament was held in the city the first time in 1999. Panama City Beach is holding the competition for the 5th time in 2011.
