The Green Revolution of 2009: Out of the House and into the Workplace
"Cutting your carbon footprint" has become a household phrase in the past year, with a flood of news stories, advertising campaigns and buzz about how you can do your bit at home to prevent global warming. Suddenly we're all worrying about our carbon footprints, insulating our lofts at the weekend and buying eco-friendly lightbulbs. That's all well and good, but carbon emissions from individuals is just a tiny piece of the pie.The truth is that the largest part of the global enviornmental burden comes from businesses and organisations. It's like an economy of scale - if you change a small thing within a big company you can see tremendous results.
Fair enough, I hear you say. Not my job though. Its down to the management to take care of the company's environmental policy. It's just not true. If you have a workplace, you can make big changes to your employer's carbon footprint.Additionally, this can have a far more powerful impact compared to the difference you can make just at home.
Here are some pointers, small and large, on achieving a greener workplace:
- Recycle office waste. There's a huge amount of potentially recyclable material that businesses dispose of every day - far more than your home output could ever be. Have a go at introducing recycling collection units on each floor. Its simpler than you think, as there are countless government and charity programs to do this for you for free.
- Drive less to work. Set up a car pooling scheme to cut down on exhaust emissions. Or just cut out the car altogether - consider cycling or walking to work.
- Install eco-friendly lightbulbs. At home, switching to low energy bulbs will only save you a small amount of energy. But multiply that by all the bulbs lighting up your office and you can see how powerful a change this could make.
- Green Computing. The energy usage of IT systems is huge for the majority of companies and organisations. One of the basic things you can do is make sure PCs and monitors are properly switched off at the end of the day. But don't just stop there - by getting your IT department to review the company's "green baseline" you can multiply the impact. Get them to perform some proper asset tracking on all office IT equipment, using professional asset management software, a business can dramatically reduce its carbon footprint and help meet increasingly stringent government environmental requirements.
- Campaigning. Move from baby steps to giant leaps. Gather yourself a like-minded platoon at work and start campaigning change and you'll see big things happen.By putting pressure on our bosses to take seriously their green duties we little guys can make a real difference. Often, like the IBM ad above shows, the green way is also the most economical way.A good example would be businesses that create huge volumes of carbon emissions from transporting goods by air, sea and land. Pushing them to properly review their transport and logistics management and make the smallest of improvements can save them big money and dramatically reduce their carbon footprint in the process.
These ideas are just the beginning. I just wanted to put the idea out there of how powerful going green in the workplace can be. Agree? Disagree? Feel free to air your thoughts!
playstation problem, wont work lights change in sequence?
turned my playstation on,the light goes green then amber then flashes red,any ideas what the problem is?
Yup, you have the YLOD. Yellow light of death indicates a generic hardware failure.
Right now, u cud just go to the store where u bought it at and they should fix it 'cos obviously when u bought the ps3, u also ps3 insurance at the store too, right? Right?...lol
If not if its in warranty, u'll be able to get it fixed cheaply or even for free from sony.
Try to call the Sony helping or e-mail them. I would suggest e-mail as it's free!
